Dr. Alan Goldhamer is one of the world’s preeminent experts on water-only fasting. He is the founder of TrueNorth Health Center, a groundbreaking residential health education program that serves to educate the public, researchers, and physicians worldwide about the benefits of water-only fasting and a whole-plant-food diet free of added salt, oil, and sugar. Over the past four decades, Dr. Goldhamer has supervised the fasts of over 25,000 patients at TrueNorth Health Center. Under his guidance, the Center has become renowned as one of the premier training facilities for doctors wishing to gain certification in the supervision of therapeutic fasting. 

Dr. Goldhamer is also president of the board of directors of the TrueNorth Health Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding evidence-based knowledge of how medically supervised, water-only fasting and an exclusively whole-plant-food diet impact human health. The Foundation also provides training opportunities in the form of medical residencies and clinical research internships.

Dr. Goldhamer is co-author of two important books, The Pleasure Trap: Mastering The Hidden Force That Undermines Health and Happiness, with Dr. Douglas J. Lisle, and Can Fasting Save Your Life? with Dr. Toshia Myers. He is also the author of The Health Promoting Cookbook

Dr. Goldhamer has been the principal investigator in two landmark studies. The first, "Medically Supervised Water-Only Fasting in the Treatment of Hypertension," appeared in the June 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. Its publication marked a turning point in the evolution of evidence supporting the benefits of water-only fasting. The second study, "Medically Supervised Water-Only Fasting in the Treatment of Borderline Hypertension," appeared in the October 2002 issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Currently, Dr. Goldhamer is directing a team that is developing a prospective study incorporating random assignment and long-term follow-up on the cost and clinical outcomes in the treatment of high blood pressure with fasting and a health-promoting diet. 

Dr. Goldhamer graduated from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon. After receiving his degree, Dr. Goldhamer traveled to Australia, where he became licensed as an osteopathic physician.
